Chinua Achebe Chinua Achebe is said to be â€Å"one of the most influential writers† of the century not only in Nigeria, his homeland but also throughout the world (Albany). Chinua Achebe was born in Ogidi, Nigeria on November 16, 1930. He was born a son of a Chrisitan Churchman, Isaiah Okafo and Janet N. Achebe. Achebe was raised an Ibo Christian, which made him stand out among his fellow peers. Achebe’s lifestyle was different than that of other people living in his village because of his religious background and upbringing. Okonkwo is driven by his desire to be a better man than his father was. Okonkwo is ashamed of his father because he was a weak man with no accomplishments. The book describes the village and the traditions of the people of the village. It describes in detail their religious beliefs. All aspects of Ibo life are based on their religion. The conflict in the story arises when Christian missionaries force their way into the Umofia and began to tear apart the lives of the Ibos. The missionaries try to convert the Ibos into Christians and a western way of living. When some of the Ibos change their lives to be like the missionaries’, civil disagreements and hostility begin to occur. The story is essentially a fictional tale about an event that really did occur in Nigeria. In this story, Achebe is describing the western movement that Nigeria went through and is still dealing with today through fictional characters. Achebe wrote a follow-up story to Things Fall Apart called No Longer at Ease. No Longer at Ease is about Okonkwo’s grandson, Obi who is part of the â€Å"corrupted† generation of the Ibo people. This is a radical change to the provisions contained in s 323 (1) (d) of the 1958 Crimes Act, which recognizes the principles of foreseeable probability and places the onus of proving it to the prosecutor. In the ruling of the court, for an individual to be held culpable for the crime of a primary offender, there is a need of proving the fact that he was aware of all the circumstances that will emerge during the commission of a primary offence, and he was on a sound mind. R v Stokes Difford (1990) is an important case law that provides the importance of examining the mental capability and condition of a secondary offender, during the process of planning the crime[11]. Note that, while examining the mental condition of the secondary offender, he must prove that he had no intention of participating in the principal offence, thus he did not have the essential facts and information about the primary crime that occurred. Consistency of Reversing the Onus of Proof One of the most important common law principles on the burden of proof is that the prosecutor should proof beyond reasonable doubt that an accused is guilty of a crime. This is a principle that was first established in Woolmington v DPP[1935] UKHL 1, where the courts ruled that a person is first presumed innocent, until the prosecutor is able to proof beyond reasonable doubt that he is guilty of an offence[12]. On this note, the House of Lords in this case denoted that the presumption of proof to a suspect is an important individual right that cannot be removed from the suspect. Note that, this notion of burden of proof laying on the state, manages to create a relationship between an individual and the state, and the aim is to ensure that an innocent civilian is not jailed. On this note, placing the burden of proof to a suspect is not consistent to the common law principles that are established by Woolmington v DPP, and other similar cases. Nonetheless, in Williamson v Ah[1926] HCA 46, Justice Isaac was able to rule that reversing the burden of proof may be justifiable in certain circumstances[13]. While ruling on this issue, the judge explained that it is a person who comes up with an affirmation of an issue, who should then prove it. Section 8 (1) of the 1983 Criminal Code Act places the burden of proof to a suspect, in regarding proving that he was not able to foresee the possibility of a secondary crime happening. This is an assertion that an accused can make, while defending himself against the accusation of a secondary offence carried out by a group. Thus, as per the principles established in Williamson v Ah, there is a balance between the personal liberty of a suspect and the sovereignty of a state, when such a person is a suspect is allowed to proof his case, in such circumstances. Conclusion Finally, the Criminal Code Act is the best law that is able to determine the culpability of a suspect who have engaged in a joint criminal activity. This is in regard to the occurrence of a secondary crime during the process of carrying out the primary crime. Moreover, the principles established in this case law is supported by a number of common law doctrines that places the burden of proof to a suspect, when it comes to proving the foreseeability of possibilities. It is because of the weaknesses of s 323 of the 1958 Crimes Act, that parliament was able to repel and replace the sections. The sections were replaced in a manner that, to convict an accessory to a secondary crime, there is a need of looking at other factors such as the intention of the primary offender during the commission of the secondary crime, and a foreseeability of possibilities. Waking up each morning, I thank God for giving me another day, for the gift of life and all gifts of nature. Truly, all around me comes from God who has created everything.The Almighty has given this earth for me to develop and cherish. Human life itself is a great miracle and everyday this miracle happens every minute across the globe. God is manifested in the beautiful sceneries of nature, from the mountains to the seas to the universe to the birth of a child.I see the purpose for which God has shared His splendor and presence in me through these wonders of nature. It is because He wants me to get close to Him, to know Him better, and to love Him more. He is telling me that He is everywhere and that He is always there when I needed His help.Nature is the mirror for which God reflects Himself so that I could recognize Him and His glory. When problems arise I would usually commune with nature to seek refuge watching the waves and listening to the waters in the beach or go mountain cl imbing and see the world from above. Just by appreciating God’s handiworks is enough for me to see life much better amidst the uncertainties that lie ahead. God communicates through our environment.From the beginning, God has created this world for us to nourish but now we neglect this duty and could possibly face annihilation as it is slowly happening this very moment.Taking this walk with nature enriches my spirituality because nature itself is spiritual and Godly since it is not made by man. The slave narratives are a significant form of literature that stem from the experience of enslaved Africans in the United States. Male and female slave narrators wrote for the same purpose: to show that they deserved to live as free people in a free society. Frederick Douglass’ Narrative in the Life of Frederick Douglass: an American Slave stresses the importance of literacy and manhood to the slave male, Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave on the other hand, opens a window to the life of a slave woman and we get to see that her motivation lies mainly with ensuring the wellbeing of her family. Both narratives give details of their experiences as slaves but express different turning points in their struggle for freedom. Two different scenes from their texts illustrate how far apart they are in terms of gender and tonality and yet so similar in their escape from slavery. In Fredrick Douglass’ Narrative, Frederick describes one of the major turning points in his life, which is his fight against Covey. In chapter ten of the Narrative, Douglass describes a scene when he returns to Covey’s on a Sunday morning with a root in hand. Covey speaks kindly to Douglass and Douglass begins to think that the root’s magical powers have worked. Scare Quotes and Sneer Words Scare Quotes and Sneer Words Scare Quotes and Sneer Words By Mark Nichol When a writer wishes to call attention to a dubious or specious claim or to a person of questionable honesty, two forms of shorthand are available: scare quotes and sneer words. Scare quotes are quotation marks framing a word or phrase to call attention to it and point out that the writer does not accept the word or phrase as valid or that the writer is casting aspersions. For example, one might write, â€Å"Several ‘experts’ were unable to provide a convincing explanation.† (This sentence mocks the supposed experts for their failure to demonstrate their expertise.) Another use of scare quotes is to point out someone’s disingenuous behavior, as in â€Å"She conveniently ‘forgot’ to send an invitation to her sister-in-law.† (These quotation marks indicate that the forgetfulness was feigned.) An alternate method, one that is necessary in speaking to make one’s point, is to use â€Å"quote-unquote.† In writing, of course, this is redundant to the actual use of scare quotes, but it’s used occasionally in an attempt to be droll, as in â€Å"I walked in to find him quote-unquote indisposed† to refer to someone who is clearly inebriated. Various other combinations can provide judgmental commentary. For example, to say that somebody is hand-picked can neutrally indicate that the person has been chosen as another person’s successor, assistant, or confidant, but with carefully crafted context, it can also suggest that the hand-picked person is not necessarily qualified or suitable for the job. Once-powerful, meanwhile, suggests that someone has fallen in status; again, context can make clear that the term is deprecatory.
